The Clarion SERVING THE BREVARD COLLEGE Volume 72, Issue 18 COMMUNITY SINCE 1935 February 16, 2007 Summer trips to Iceland offered by ACEE by Tom Cowan News Editor The Appalachian Center for Environmental Education (ACEE), an organiiiation recently started by Brevard College, is of* fering its first set of international trips to Iceland for the up coming months of July and August, The trips are geology based and will be led by BC geology professor Dr, Jim Reynolds. According to Reynolds, this will be the fourth geology trip he has led to Iceland. Since 2000, Reynolds has led fourteen inter national geology trips to eleven different countries. Reynolds is an associate director of the ACEE, and expects that many of his trips in the future will be sponsored by the newly fonned organization. Much like in the past, Reynolds cxpects the trip to be exclusively a camping trip. Reynolds says his groups of around thirty people will be walking a total of 70 kilo meters, which will take them to hoi springs, glaciers, and volca noes. The trip will be co-led by Dr. })rainn Fridriksson, a geologist for the Iceland Geological Survey who Reynolds says has greatly contributed to his trips in the past. The trips will be 14 days each, running from between July 8-22 and July 24-Aug. 8. The trips are open to anyone; students can re ceive two pass/fail geology credit hours. With a 1200 page book, an accompanying screenplay and numerous works of art under his belt, he plans to take the next big step soon— marketing his work. This is what makes or breaks an artist. The ability to explain and sell you creative genius is a whole other field. This artist however, had no problem explaining his world to me over the course of three hours. It all started when Mr, Clark re ceived the Artist Achievement award and two scholarships from his high school in 1992. He never used them (hough. Completing two years of collegc and working in several restaurants drove him to write a novel as a type of es cape, Heputhispaintbrush down and picked up a pen. Three years later, he finished his first draft. From there, he decided that his story needed to be a trilogy. His epic story about life, phi losophy and social issues told through an alternate, sci-fi universe needed artwork to describe his characters and world. Instead of paying someone else to complete this task, he took it under his own interest to sketch out his ideas during his lunch breaks while working at Bl-Lo in Hendersonville. Aftwthecomple tion of the novel, he attempted to rewrite it and made it through the first third over the course of a year. Due to the Icngthiness of il all, he dropped the writing and picked up his paintbrush again. Most of Scott's thoughts and contemplations came to him while hiking or biking in the woods. This was his time to focus upon life, religion, energy, spirituality, unificaticHi and nature, which have all found their way into his writ ing and art. "Writing,” as he stated, “is supposed to be a look into your self,” which later branched into the world’s cunent stale and other is sues. "Fantastic realism,” is how he chose to describe hts work, which lies somewhere between fantasy and surrealism. All of the work, see Scott Clark, page 10 What's Inside?
